The long shadow of Paraguay’s military dictatorship | DW Documentary

Latin America has long been one of the most dangerous regions for human rights and environmental activists. Hundreds of people are murdered every year, in crimes that have a sad tradition on the continent. Some are linked to the anti-communist repression of the 1970s, as shown in the film "The Condor Still Flies." Back then, with the support of the United States, political opponents of right-wing dictatorships were kidnapped, tortured and murdered - part of a campaign called Operation Condor. Today, economic power in Latin America lies with multinational corporations, including those in the soy industry. Their enemies are indigenous peoples and landless farmers who demand the right to land and are therefore persecuted and criminalized as terrorists or killed by hired assassins. In 2024, 80 per cent of all murders of environmental activists recorded worldwide took place in Latin America. According to recent reports by the international NGO Global Witness, the region remains the most dangerous in the world for human rights and environmental activists. Director Anna Recalde Miranda searches for the roots of this violent conflict. Her journey between the past and the present sheds light on the origins of today's ecological disaster and the violent oppression of indigenous peoples and activists. The tactics in this conflict may differ from those of 50 years ago, but the structures are the same: landowners and multinational corporations secure their interests with the help of the police and army. The shadow of the condor still hovers over the Latin American continent. #documentary #dwdocumentary #dwdocs ______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines.
