The Turkish Naval Forces Cup is a 550-mile offshore race from Istanbul to Göcek. The yachts sail the entire distance without stops or breaks. This year, I was co-helmsman on an IMX-40. From the very beginning, we were sailing well. We fought, kept watch, and kept our competitors in check. But midway through the race, we made a series of bad decisions and found ourselves far behind the fleet in a calm zone. With less than 24 hours left until the finish line, we could have given up, deciding we wouldn't make the time limit anyway. But we decided to take a chance, and at that moment the race began anew for us.
