Severe weather situation on July 17, 2026 in eastern and southern Germany! On July 17, 2026, an extremely exciting and dynamic weather situation developed over parts of eastern and southern Germany. Several powerful thunderstorms and supercells were underway – the perfect opportunity for us to spend an extended day chasing them. We started at noon in Hanover and headed towards Magdeburg and Bernburg. North of a supercell, we were able to document several massive dust devils – definitely an extraordinary sight in this size and intensity. The dry ground, a slight convergence, and a dark, already harvested field caused the air near the ground to heat up considerably. This was then forced to rise, creating impressive dust devils. Just a few kilometers south of Bernburg, we subsequently documented another supercell. This one developed further in the Harz foothills and produced hail with diameters of up to five centimeters. The mesocyclone was clearly visible, and we were able to track the cell for an extended period. We continued across the countryside towards Dessau-Roßlau and then onto the A9 motorway. After several more observation points, we finally documented a massive gust front in southern Brandenburg – possibly also associated with a supercell. The storm then moved on towards Berlin, but weakened considerably there due to its diminishing intensity. We observed further thunderstorms on the A10 south of Berlin and later on the A12 east of the capital. While these no longer exhibited severe weather characteristics, they still provided a fitting end to an extremely successful day of storm chasing. Overall, it was an incredibly exciting day with many special observations, extraordinary structures, and, of course, lots of fun chasing!
