NISARGADATTA. Nirupana 18

The material presented here is based on notes taken by Sri Dinkar Kshirsagar while attending daily meetings at the residence of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. These notes were taken during the period of 1977-79, before Maharaj passed away in 1981. The daily notes are titled nirupanas. This word means “investigating,” “defining,” “searching,” etc. Maharaj says, “The meaning of the word nirupana is to speak to you about your true nature as what it is and how it is.” Toward the end of his life, Maharaj preferred to emphasize the central teaching and not dwell on secondary matters. He used to say that what was being discussed at that moment was different from the previous dialogues recorded in the book I Am That. These notes were reviewed by Maharaj, who encouraged their distribution. The phrases, for the most part, have been left as they were spoken without any changes.
