Parallel 9: end of series 1

The end of the first series of Parallel 9, which ran on Saturday mornings in the summer months on BBC1. To recap: Mercator is imprisoned on prison planet Parallel 9 with three other alien criminals, computer life support machine The Tope and visiting earth girl Calendular, but is only allowed out of his time capsule for two hours every Saturday morning. All summer they've been trying to escape, and here they finally manage it - or do they? Let's be honest - Parallel 9 was bloody weird. I loved this first series as a child (probably says more about me than anything) but it was far from a success, mainly because of the bizarre plot and, as can be seen here, it was often a bit dark and scary for the Saturday morning slot (aliens throwing hand grenades?!). Consequently when it returned in 1993 Parallel 9 was now a "research centre" as opposed to a prison planet, with an earth base as well as being a lot more colourful. But it wasn't half as good... Incidentally in case you're wondering the entire first series had this deep letterboxing effect, and the tape rewinding at 0:19 is as broadcast (presumably the end sequence was pre-recorded because of the effects). But isn't the set (as seen in the end credits) magnificent?! 19.09.92. All copyright remains BBC/Roach. This clip is from my own VHS recording.
