TRIBUN-TIMUR.COM, MAKASSAR - Protests against the fuel price hike and criticism of several policies of President Prabowo Subianto in Makassar City, South Sulawesi, concentrated in the flyover area. The flyover area is located at the intersection of Jl. AP Pettarani-Urip Sumoharjo. The area also houses the South Sulawesi Provincial Directorate General of Taxes (DGT), the High Court, and the South Sulawesi Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD), which were burned down during the riots on August 28, 2025. This location is a popular spot for Makassar demonstrators to voice their aspirations. In addition to its strategic location on the national road, the flyover also provides shade from the scorching sun. Police from the Makassar City Police Traffic Unit and the Sabhara (Sabhara) were on standby to oversee the demonstration. Tribune's observations revealed several student groups voicing their aspirations under the flyover, which was built in 2006 and inaugurated in 2010. Among them was the HMI Badko Sulsel (South Sulawesi Student Association). The three groups took turns at the same location, giving speeches and burning tires. The Head of the Higher Education, Student Affairs, and Youth Division (PTKP) of the HMI South Sulawesi Coordinating Board (Badko), Muh Rafly Tanda. These included the Merah Putih cooperative and the National Nutrition Agency (BGN). Rafly requested an evaluation of these two flagship programs of President Prabowo Subianto. This is especially true given the arrest of three former BGN leaders by the Attorney General's Office. "Stop the Merah Putih cooperative and BGN, and thoroughly investigate the perpetrators within BGN, down to the SPPG (Student and Student Organizations), including the Regional and District Coordinators. They must also be questioned," said Muh Rafly Tanda. Furthermore, Rafly said that the South Sulawesi Regional Leadership Council (HMI Badko Sulsel) also highlighted the weakening of the rupiah against foreign currencies, specifically the US dollar. He believes the weakening rupiah exchange rate has an impact on the community's economic activities. He also highlighted President Prabowo Subianto's statement that rural communities don't use dollars. "Secondly, regarding the weakening rupiah inflation, this certainly has an impact on the community. President Prabowo's statement was also deeply offensive to the community, stating that dollars are no longer available in the regions or villages," Rafly stated. "That's very offensive, considering the weakening rupiah, which has also led to rising food and fuel prices," he continued. On that occasion, Rafly also expressed HMI Badko Sulsel's stance, which strongly opposes the price increase for non-subsidized fuel, Pertamax. He believes the price increase has a domino effect on the community's economy, even though the fuel price increase is not subsidized. "We also reject the Pertamax fuel price increase. Therefore, we, the Coordinating Board of the Islamic Students Association (HMI) of South Sulawesi, are firmly evaluating the Prabowo-Gibran administration," he added.
