The Crusader States: 200 Years That Shouldn't Have Existed
In July 1187, on a baking hillside called the Horns of Hattin, the entire army of Christian Jerusalem broke from thirst before the fighting even began. Eighty-eight years of conquest unravelled in a single afternoon - yet the Crusader States somehow clung on for another hundred years after that. This is the full life story of the four states the medieval world said could never last: the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Principality of Antioch, the County of Tripoli, and the County of Edessa. A few hundred thousand Franks, stranded on a fifty-mile-wide strip of coast, surrounded by Damascus, Aleppo, Mosul, and the wealth of Cairo. By every rule of war they should have been gone by 1100. Instead they held on for nearly 200 years - and the reason why is far stranger than strength. In this video you'll learn: ✅ Why a divided Islamic world kept the Crusaders alive for 50 years without firing a shot ✅ How Krak des Chevaliers and a chain of castles turned weakness into survival ✅ Why the Knights Templar and Hospitaller became the first standing army of the age ✅ How Venice, Genoa and Pisa kept the kingdom breathing through the sea ✅ How Saladin united Egypt and Syria and shattered everything at Hattin in 1187 ✅ Why Acre held out until 1291, and what its fall truly meant If you love history told as a story, subscribe - we bring lost worlds back to life one video at a time. Then tell me in the comments: 1. Were the Crusader States doomed from day one, or could they have survived with better choices? 2. Which fortress or figure deserves its own full episode next? 3. Saladin or Richard the Lionheart - who do you think understood this war better? Next time: the castle that defied a thousand-year siege and the men who built it. #crusades #history #crusaderstates #medievalhistory #saladin #knightstemplar #kingdomofjerusalem
