Commemoration of the Battle of Isandlwana 2025
Isandlwana Battle Fields, 22 January 2025 - KwaZulu-Natal Premier Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, accompanied by members of his Cabinet, visited the Isandlwana Battlefields to mark the 146th anniversary of the decisive 1879 confrontation between the Zulu and British armies. The Battle of Isandlwana is regarded as a significant milestone in South African history, as Zulu forces achieved a landmark victory during the Anglo-Zulu War. The commemoration served as an opportunity to honour the bravery and strategic acumen of the Zulu warriors, whose triumph resonated far beyond the battlefield. Premier Ntuli emphasised the importance of preserving historical sites and recognising the cultural heritage they represent, stating that these sites foster a sense of identity and unity among the people of KwaZulu-Natal. “The Battle of Isandlwana stands as a testimony to the resilience and military prowess of the Zulu nation,” said Premier Ntuli. “By commemorating this event, we pay tribute to the legacy left behind by our forebears and deepen our appreciation for the cultural richness of our province.” Government officials, local leaders, and community members in attendance reflected on the enduring significance of the Anglo-Zulu War, recognising how it shaped the region’s historical narrative. The Premier reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to preserving and promoting KwaZulu-Natal’s heritage, underscoring that such commemorations help maintain a sense of pride and identity for current and future generations.
