Alberta independence just had one of the biggest weeks in the movement's history, and I couldn't not talk about it. A few weeks ago the courts blocked the Stay Free Alberta petition, which had collected over 300,000 signatures, more than the 177,732 needed to trigger a referendum. Justice Shaina Leonard ruled that the duty to consult First Nations applied to the citizen petition process itself, in a decision that constitutional lawyer and Alberta Prosperity Project co-founder Jeff Rath called a political decision, not a judicial one. Both the Alberta government and Stay Free Alberta are appealing. Then Danielle Smith addressed the province and announced a two-step process: on October 19th, 2026, Albertans will vote on whether to instruct the government to commence the legal process for a binding referendum on Alberta independence, not on independence itself. My honest reaction? And why I think some of the anger at Smith is misdirected.
