When a fire breaks out, you spray water. To us, this is common sense that is taken for granted. However, the firefighters of Joseon aimed their axes not at the house on fire, but at the 'indeedable house' right next to it. Not to put out the fire, but to demolish a still-sturdy house with their own hands. That was their first mission. Why on earth was that? One spring day in 1426, a single day of flames reduced one out of every eight houses in Hanyang to ashes. This tragedy gave birth to the first 'state organization fighting fire' in Joseon, and left behind fifty men who defended the city with nothing but a single axe in an era lacking water and proper equipment.
