90's Commercials Vol. 578

These commercials aired on MTV on May 16th, 1993 1. "120 Minutes" Intro/host segment (The Nirvana album he mentions was of course "In Utero", released on September 21st, 1993 which ended up being their third, and final, studio album) 2. 1993 MTV Movie Awards Nominees for best action sequence (The MTV movie awards were held less than a month after this on 6/8/93. It's interesting they did the voting so close to the actual event, but I guess it wouldn't take too long to tally results from a phone survey. Mel Gibson's Motorcycle Crash from "Lethal Weapon 3" won this category) 3. 1993 MTV Movie Awards Nominees (Brought to you by Butterfinger and Puma) 4. Butterfinger (With the Simpsons) 5. Puma Disc System 6. Hyundai Sonata, Elantra, Scoupe and Excel (Despite the "introducing" these car models were not actually new at the time. The Sonata and Elantra are still made today. The Scoupe was made from 1990 to 1995 and the Excel was made from 1985 to 1999) 7. Pepsi (With Shaquille O'Neal) 8. Digital Music Express Special Sneak Preview: "Much Ado About Nothing" (This movie had premiered in New York City on 5/6/93 but apparently did not get a wide release until July) 9. Best Buy 10. "120 Minutes" Commercial Bumper (With Iggy Pop) 11. MTV In The Afternoon Promo (With Beavis and Butthead) 12. TV Spot for "Super Mario Bros." (You have a movie based on one of the biggest video games of all time with an absolutely iconic theme song...and you use "Jump" by the Pointer Sisters? Nothing about this movie makes sense, even the advertising!) 13. Miller Genuine Draft 14. Juicy Fruit Gum 15. '93 Fleer Ultra Baseball Cards (I definitely had some cards from this series. I was really into collecting Marvel comic cards at the time but bought baseball cards occasionally) 16. Levi's 501 Jeans 17. Nestle Crunch NBA Team Bars (Collect all 27 and place them in your collectible candy bar album, they'll be worth something someday!) 18. Six Flags 19. Diet Squirt 20. "120 Minutes" Commercial Bumper (With Chris Mars, former drummer for the Replacements and a solo artist at the time after he left that group in 1990) 21. MTV "The Last Action Hero" Contest (A very 90's commercial. It would have been fun to win the contest and party with Arnold at Planet Hollywood. This movie did not exactly bomb at the box office but probably didn't turn much of a profit for the studio once the advertising budget was factored in. Many regard it as a cult classic these days) 22. AIDS PSA (With Ice Cube. "You think you know what's poppin' on AIDS?") 23. Star Fox for Super NES (Nintendo just announced a remake of Star Fox 64 for Switch 2 but I would love to see a modern remake of the original game with the same low poly aesthetics running at a high framerate) 24. Combos 25. Sprite (With Kris Kross) 26. Promo for "Beavis And Butthead" 27. Academy Of Art College 28. TV Spot for "Hot Shots! Part Duex" 29. Anthrax "Sound Of White Noise" (Their sixth album which debuted at #7 on the Billboard Top 100; their highest ever chart position) 30. Combos 31. Academy Of Art College 32. Digital Music Express (We had TCI as our cable provider back then and they were always selling the DMX service. I specifically remember this infomercial with music producer David Foster playing all the time on one of their cable channels:    • DMX DAVID FOSTER FRONTLINE DEMO  ) 33. Best Buy 34. "120 Minutes" Commercial Bumper (With Les Claypool of Primus) 35. Butterfinger (With the Simpsons) 36. Promo for "Passenger 57" on Pay Per View (Originally released to theaters in November, 1992...this movie had already been out on VHS for about a month when this aired) 37. DeVry 38. Entertainment Weekly "Rock Anthems" (18:17 That might be the most generic looking album cover art that I've ever seen) 39. Best Buy 40. Kidz Bedzzz (Sorry Last Action Hero contest, this ad is now officially the most 90's commercial in this video) 41. Squirt 42. Envision Contact Lenses
