Illegal Gopher Tortoises Arrive After Decades of Being Kept a Secret!

Two gopher tortoises with incredible backstories just arrived at Garden State Tortoise… and both were illegal to own. One tortoise had been with his owner for 43 years — and he’s a rare color morph you almost never see. The other had been with her owner for 35 years before finally being surrendered. Because gopher tortoises are a protected species, taking them from the wild can carry huge penalties — up to $5,000 in fines or even jail time. After decades in captivity, Fish & Wildlife granted us special permission to give both tortoises permanent homes here at Garden State Tortoise. It’s an incredible moment for us… and for them. In this video, we share their journey, explain why these tortoises are so heavily protected, and show you what their new lives will look like here at the sanctuary. #turtle #tortoise #gardenstatetortoise ▶️Join our PATREON:   / gardenstatetortoise   ▶️Subscribe to our channel:    / gardenstatetortoise   ▶️Follow us on Instagram:   / garden_state_tortoise   ▶️Follow us on TikTok:   / gardenstatetortoise   ▶️Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebo ok.com/GardenStateTortoise/ ▶️Visit our website: https://www.gardenstatetortoise.com Who is Garden State Tortoise? 🧐 However you made it here, thank you and welcome to Garden State Tortoise.
