he Philippine Navy is set to receive five retired Abukuma-class destroyer escorts from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), marking one of the most significant developments in Philippine military modernization in recent years. Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. confirmed that the transfer is already a "done deal," with administrative details currently being finalized. The first Abukuma-class ships are expected to retire from Japanese service beginning in 2027, with deliveries to the Philippines anticipated over the following two to three years.
