Shinminato Ninomaru Town Lion Dance at Osaka Expo 2025 This footage captures the performance by Ninomaru Town, Imizu City, Toyama Prefecture, held on July 3, 2025, during Japan Day at the Osaka-Kansai Expo. It took place in the plaza in front of the Grand Roof Ring and inside the Event Commemorative Hall. This video was provided by the Kinki Imizu Association. Description of Shinminato Lion Dance The Shinminato Lion Dance, passed down in the region from the Imizu Plain to the left bank of the Jinzū River, is classified as an Imizu Lion Dance. It is a centipede lion dance where the lion performers support the body curtain with their bare hands. Originally called the “Beach Lion,” it features performances combining wildness and narrative elements. It is highly regarded nationwide as an extremely entertaining and visually impressive lion dance. In recent decades, fire-based dances have spread throughout the region, further enhancing its boldness and visual impact. In the Rokudōji, Shinminato, and Hojozu areas, lion dances were already performed during the Edo period. The “Shin-Kichō Lion Dance Equipment Box Inscription,” considered the oldest recorded lion dance in Toyama Prefecture, bears the date “August, Year of the Rat, Bunsei 11” (1828). Approximately 30 lion dance groups remain active around the Uchigawa area. Managed and operated by preservation societies and youth groups, most perform during spring festivals centered around May 15th. On lion dance days, you'll encounter the sounds of festival music and lion dances everywhere. You can also witness practice sessions in various neighborhoods starting about a month before the festival.
