How Did Persia "Become" Iran? The Story No One Told You

For over two thousand years, the West knew this empire by one name: Persia. The empire of Cyrus the Great, who freed the Jewish exiles. The empire of Darius, who funded the rebuilding of the Temple. The empire of Xerxes, whose queen Esther saved her people from annihilation. The empire of the Magi who followed a star to Bethlehem. Then in 1935, the name simply changed. Iran. Most people have no idea why — and the popular explanations range from revolution to colonial renaming to a disturbing and largely unsupported connection to Nazi Germany. Tonight we tell the real story. We trace where the name "Persia" actually came from — a Greek exonym derived from Pars, a single southwestern province, applied to an entire civilization the way an outsider might call all of Britain "England." And we trace where "Iran" actually came from — and the answer will surprise you. The name is not new. It is not a 20th century invention. It comes from Old Persian Aryānām, attested in the Avesta, and carved into stone by Sassanid kings Ardashir I and Shapur I seventeen hundred years before the 1935 international name change. The Iranian people never stopped calling their own land Iran — through every dynasty, through Ferdowsi, Hafez, and Rumi's classical Persian poetry — while the Western world continued calling the same land Persia for two and a half thousand years.
