The origin of the Schnauzer dates back to the 15th century in Germany. They were initially used as farm dogs to protect property and hunt rodents. The name "Schnauzer" comes from the German "schnauze," meaning "muzzle," a reference to their characteristic beard. The Standard Schnauzer is the oldest of the three types and is the progenitor of the other two varieties. The Miniature Schnauzer was developed in the late 19th century from crosses between the Standard Schnauzer and smaller breeds, such as the Affenpinscher and the Miniature Poodle. The Giant Schnauzer was created in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by crossing the Standard Schnauzer with large dogs, such as the Great Dane and the Bouvier des Flandres, to create a powerful guard dog.
