HSV-1 typically causes oral herpes, and HSV-2, which typically causes genital herpes. HSV-1 can be transmitted via infected saliva or lesions to the genitals. HSV-2 can be trasmitted via sexual contact (NOTE: lesions do NOT need to be present to transmit).
