A magnificent two-day route through the Meshchera region. It's very dynamic, yet offers plenty of opportunities to relax during the flood season and active snowmelt. Meshchera Lowland. The formation of this lowland is linked to the activity of glaciers, which transformed the surface into a smooth plain. After the glaciers melted, a mixture of sand, gravel, and clay lay in an even layer on the dense, impermeable clays of the Jurassic period. Meltwater filled the depressions and hollows left by the glacier, thereby forming lakes and swamps. The Meshchera Lowland is considered a land of lakes and swamps. The lakes in the lowland are mostly located in groups, and there are also lakes in river floodplains. The lakes are often connected by channels, and small rivers flow into them. The shores of most lakes are overgrown with grass and sedge. The lakes of the Meshchera Lowland are of glacial origin. Gradually overgrown, they turn into swamps. The lowlands also contain many floodplain lakes, the remnants of old riverbeds. These also become swampy. The Meshchera Lakes are very shallow, with an average depth of about 2 meters. Many lakes are connected to the surrounding swamps, from which they draw their water. The Meshchera Lowland also contains deep lakes, reaching depths of up to 50 meters or more. Scientists believe they are of thermokarst origin. These lakes have sandy bottoms and clear water. One such lake is Lake Beloye, near the town of Spas-Klepiki in the Ryazan Region. Meshchera is known for its swamps, which stretch here in a nearly continuous, wide strip. Vast moss beds are located near the Klepiki Lakes, near the villages of Kriusha and Golovanovo, along the Pra River, and within the boundaries of the Oka Nature Reserve. Swamps have already engulfed approximately 600,000 hectares of land in the Meshchera Lowland and the Oka River floodplain, and they continue to do so. Most of the swamps are marshes covered with moss tussocks and forest undergrowth. In places, lakes with sandy or peaty soils dot the swamps. These lakes have no clearly defined boundaries. In the spring, when the rivers break up, the swamps flood and become completely impassable. Swamp vapors and an abundance of midges, mosquitoes, and horseflies are characteristic of the Meshchera region. Many thanks to the Quadroostrov team for preparing and describing the route.
