In the Arizona Territory during the late nineteenth century, a determined settler builds a home inside a remote canyon and refuses to surrender his land to a wealthy cattle owner who wants complete control of the surrounding territory. To force him out, the powerful rancher sends a group of armed hired men to attack the isolated homestead. During the first violent confrontation, their employer is fatally wounded and his heir is badly injured, leaving the gunmen without clear leadership. One of the mercenaries, an unstable and cruel man, suddenly takes command and begins behaving as though he were leading a military campaign. He forces the others to treat him like a general, becomes convinced that an entire enemy army is hiding in the canyon, and even turns against his own companions whenever they question his orders. Trapped inside the besieged ranch, the settler receives unexpected help from a woman and her young son, who arrived shortly before the fighting began. After her cowardly husband abandons them, she chooses to remain and gradually develops respect for the settler’s courage and determination. Together, they strengthen the homestead, endure repeated attacks, and struggle to survive as the self-appointed commander grows increasingly violent, paranoid, and unpredictable.
