Moderner Bungalow mit viel Glas auf 800 Jahre alten Mauern | ARD Room Tour

Stefan has built himself an extraordinary dream home on the 800-year-old foundations of a former fortified tower. What was once a littered eyesore has been transformed through good planning and a great deal of craftsmanship into an architectural gem—a bungalow with a pool, lots of glass, and a spectacular view of Dresden. But let's start at the beginning: The story begins with Stefan's family, who look out every day from their terraced house onto an overgrown plot of land opposite that is being used as a rubbish dump. Stefan, himself a civil engineer, develops a vision of transforming the eyesore into a dream garden with a pool and a view of Dresden. But when historic walls are unexpectedly uncovered during the construction work, an even bigger project emerges. Stefan builds an entire house on the medieval foundations—a modern bungalow with spectacular glass architecture. A 25-meter-long glass railing opens up a view of Dresden, a ten-meter glass front creates the feeling of sitting on a large balcony, a glass floor acts as rain protection over the historic staircase, and special ship glass ensures optimal lighting. The 85-square-meter living area is open plan and combines the kitchen, dining room, and living room. A handmade sandstone fireplace with an open fire radiates coziness in the living area. But before it could be completed, Stefan's family had to overcome a number of challenges. The biggest challenge awaited them in the historic fortified tower. For 40 years, it had been used as an illegal rubbish dump. In a task reminiscent of mining, Stefan and his family spent three months removing 70 tons of scrap steel, 5,000 horseshoes, and 2,000 traffic signs from the tower, among other things. But they also uncovered more sandstone, which they were able to reuse throughout the property. Each of the historic sandstones had to be cleaned of ash and dirt by hand. Today, the renovated fortified tower serves as a garage and storage room, while the adjacent cross vaults of the manor are intended as a future guest apartment. The former embrasures are a reminder of the building's historical origins. The separate pool house, originally planned as a sauna, became Stefan's study with an unobstructed view of the Dresden countryside. The pool on the terrace has become the center of family life and a neighborhood gathering place.
