LE QUOTIDIEN DU JARDIN : DÉCOUVREZ CINQ SPECTACULAIRES FLEURS ANNUELLES GRIMPANTES (émission N°128)

NewsJardinTV, the channel dedicated to plants, gardens, botany, nature, and gardening, is pleased to offer you this issue 128 of its daily show: "Le Quotidien du Jardin." Patrick Mioulane, editor-in-chief of NewsJardinTV, answers our subscriber Véronique's question: What plant should we use to replace Virginia creeper without completely obscuring the facade of a house at an altitude of 700 m? Why not opt for annual climbing plants that deserve to be used more in our gardens? Here is a selection of 5 species: • Climbing nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus). It is also known as "large nasturtium." The plant reaches 3 m and can be left to creep or climb. The twining stems bear round leaves and orange, yellow, or red flowers, equipped with a long spur in which nectar is secreted. Nasturtiums do not tolerate transplanting well. Sow them in October or November in regions with mild winters, otherwise in April or May. Flowering begins 45 to 50 days after sowing and continues until the first frost. • Climbing cobea (Cobaea scandens) is a Polemoniaceae that can grow to over 6 m (20 ft) per year. A perennial in its native country, it is grown as an annual here. The leaves are composed of 4 to 6 oval leaflets, the terminal of which is transformed into a tendril that allows the plant to cling to its support. From May to October, the solitary, bell-shaped flowers, initially greenish, turn purple. They are fragrant, especially in the evening. • Egyptian bean (Lablab purpureus), a cousin of the bean (Fabaceae), is an edible plant (only cooked after cooking) that is part of the traditional diet in Africa, although its origins are Asian. This twining plant, whose stems grow over 6 m, is adorned with dark purple flowers that produce pods that can reach 20 cm long. Each pod contains 2 to 12 seeds. • Runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus), also known by the common names: scarlet bean, flower bean, and cluster bean. Native to the mountains of Central America and Mexico, it is a perennial in its native habitat, but is grown here as an annual. Its twining stems, which wrap around any support, measure up to 4 m long. They bear alternate, dark green leaves composed of three oval leaflets. All summer long, the plant is adorned with 10-20 cm long clusters of scarlet red or bicolored red and white papilionaceous flowers. The young pods are edible like green beans but tend to quickly become stringy. The seeds can be eaten fresh or like dried beans. • Morning Glory (Ipomoea indica). This frost-tolerant perennial (-5°C) native to the southwestern United States and northern Chile is commonly grown as an annual. It develops twining stems 5-10 m long and, as they creep along the ground, layer themselves, making it a plant pest in Australia, South Africa, etc. The 15 cm long, heart-shaped leaves are divided into 3-5 dark green, slightly hairy lobes. From July until the first frost, Ipomoea indica bears funnel-shaped, purplish-blue flowers measuring 6 to 10 cm in diameter. They open in the morning and fade in the evening or during very hot weather, but they are constantly renewed. Morning glory can be confused with morning glory or purple bindweed (Ipomoea purpurea), which is also grown as an annual, but whose size is smaller (3 to 5 m). Thank you for watching this daily program. We hope you enjoyed this video. The entire NewsJardinTV team wishes you a pleasant time and looks forward to seeing you tomorrow at 7 p.m. for a new program: "THE DAILY GARDEN." It's on NewsJardinTV and nowhere else! Patrick will answer this question: My plant isn't flowering, why and what should I do?
