We love being able to film for months at a time each fall. What we love even more are those “jackpot” days in the woods when something really special happens and we’re there to capture it. Today’s feature is one of those days for Libby. She filmed and produced this entire video. I’m pretty proud of her for this one. Enjoy! This movie features the big guy Royal, and a brief cameo by a guest at the end. :07 seconds Royal does the Flehmen’s response using the Jacobsons organ in his palate to determine the cow’s readiness to mate. :31 seconds He is with the cow and her twin calves. :58 seconds Another Flemen’s response 1:16 A calf approaches Royal but gets scared when he shakes her off. She runs to Mommy! 1:49 Royal Flemens again, we figure she must be close to estrus. 2:20 Cow is bedded, Royal is going to stay close. 3:17 The first curious calf is back to check Royal out. (Mom is back up for now) 4:40 The calf gets braver 5:10 The calf actually rubs faces with Royal 5:43 Notice the cow lick on the calf, it’s just like the big bull we call 23. 5:49 The cow has bedded again, so Royal does too. 6:03 The first calf walks off and the other calf approaches Royal 6:38 The cowlick calf walks to Royal as the other calf is bedded. 6:59 Cowlick calf gets braver. 7:09 Precious moment with calf and Royal, really beautiful behavior to watch. 7:17 Royal get up very carefully taking care not to hurt or scare the little moose. 7:27 Royal stretches. 7:37 The calf checks out his antlers. Royal is careful not to hit her. 7:56 Royal moves away to bed again. 8:14 Both calves bedded. 8:50 The camera pans from calves to Royal then to the cow. Everyone is bedded. 9:04 Cool shot of all four bedded. SURPRISE 9:12 SOH…he had been there all along and Royal had allowed it. Royal is dominant over SOH.
