The Soldier and the Sailor - British Army Song
"The Soldier and the Sailor" also known as "The Soldier's Prayer" was a popular song amongst the rank and file soldiers of the Victorian army. This particular version is from the Crimean war, but there were many others. Description of the images used: Image 1: The allied landing in the Crimea, 1854 by Max Beeger. Image 2: Two British soldiers drinking, 1855 Image 3: A French cantinière (a French name for women who are attached to military regiments as sutlers or canteen keepers) in the Crimea during the Crimean War in 1855, photographed by Roger Fenton. Image 4: Queen Victoria's First Visit to her Wounded Soldiers by Jerry Barrett, 1856. Image 5: Duke of Cambridge with the Grenadier Guards in the background at the Battle of the Alma on 20th September 1854. Image 6: I can't remember exactly where I found this illustration, but it seems to show soldiers of the allied army embracing a Russian soldier after the surrender of the Russian army, 1856.
