KOSOVO: MITROVICA: ALBANIANS RETURN

(21 Aug 1999) Albanian/Nat Before the war, Albanian and Serbs used to live side by side in Mitrovica. Now it is a divided city. But some Albanians who fled the city are coming back to live there once again. They are being returned under the terms of an agreement worked out a week ago by K-FOR, the U-N, the Serbs and the Albanians. On Friday, two families were escorted by French K-FOR troops back to their homes. They are the first group of Albanians to be returned. Although they had Serbs as their neighbours before the war, they are worried for their safety during the night when there are no K-FOR patrols. Meritta Shala, who is married with two children said she is worried about her future. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "After three months, I came back to my home and I hope I am going to stay here. I hope that they are going to leave me alone.
