Exploring the Endangered Future of Heritage Buses: What Lies Ahead?
The United Kingdom is perhaps the best place in the world for heritage vehicles. There are almost no restrictions on what you own and drive, coupled with perks for certain older heritage vehicles like exemptions from vehicle tax, congestion and low emission zone charges and MOT inspections. There is even a heritage lottery where winnings can be used to restore historically significant vehicles. The thing is, if you go to any heritage bus event nowadays, people of different age groups generally don’t mix. The older generation of enthusiasts can be found mostly in the classic half cabs, while the teens and young adults hang out exclusively on the modern low floors. Yes, those 07 plate Enviro 400s are now preserved heritage buses… buses that the former group cannot figure out what all the fuss is about, and vice versa. Of course, it would not come as a surprise that people prefer whatever they had grown up with; that’s just the way it is, except maybe for music - who doesn’t like 80s music? However, the growing trend of disinterest among younger enthusiasts raises uncertainty about the future of these nostalgic icons that started it all. After all, if the next generation is unwilling to look after these vehicles, what is going to happen to them when their owners are no longer with us?
