Why Japanese Admirals Were Horrified A Single American Submarine Sank Their Largest Warship

Why Japanese Admirals Were Horrified A Single American Submarine Sank Their Largest Warship One American submarine. Six torpedoes in the dark. And the largest warship ever sunk beneath the sea. SUMMARY This documentary tells the story of USS Archerfish and the sinking of Shinano — the largest warship ever destroyed by a submarine. In November 1944, Japan’s navy was collapsing. Its carrier fleet had been shattered at Midway, the Philippine Sea, and Leyte Gulf. But inside a covered dry dock at Yokosuka, Japan had built one last secret giant: Shinano. She began life as the third Yamato-class battleship. After Midway, she was converted into a massive aircraft carrier — battleship below, carrier above, armored like a fortress and hidden from American intelligence. The United States Navy did not even know she existed. But Shinano was unfinished. Her watertight doors were untested. Her pumps were unreliable. Her crew was rushed together. Her captain, Toshio Abe, warned that the ship was not ready to sail. Tokyo ordered her to sea anyway. Thirty miles away, USS Archerfish was on patrol under Commander Joseph Enright — a submarine captain trying to redeem himself after a painful failure the year before. His boat was supposed to be on lifeguard duty for B-29 crews, but when the air raid was canceled, Archerfish was free to hunt. At 8:48 PM on November 28, 1944, Archerfish picked up a huge radar contact. For more than six hours, Enright chased a ship faster than his own submarine, betting that Japanese zigzag doctrine would create the geometry he needed. Just after 3 AM, Shinano crossed his bow. Enright fired six torpedoes. Four struck home. What followed was not the destruction of an invincible ship by raw firepower alone. It was the collapse of a rushed, unfinished giant. Progressive flooding, failed watertight doors, untrained damage control parties, and broken pumps turned four torpedo hits into a disaster Japan could not stop. Shinano had been at sea for only seventeen hours. When Enright reported what he had sunk, American intelligence refused to believe him. No such carrier existed in their records. Only after the war did Japanese archives reveal the truth. One submarine had sunk the largest warship in history.
