Until the creation of the new dance in the 1940s, we passed down the old Takada Hachijoshi style of dance. After the creation of the new dance, we quickly adopted the new dance and now focus our dedication activities on the new dance. As the 1980s began, our young members grew, and we were invited to participate in many regional competitions and performances, becoming a widely known troupe. We will continue to train successors, while remaining committed to "true kagura" and devoting ourselves to the preservation of traditional performing arts. Yokota Hachiman Shrine / Festival: Third Saturday of September Ryuosha Shrine / Festival: First Saturday of November 4895-4 Yokota, Midori-cho, Aki-Takata City, Hiroshima Prefecture 731-0611 ■Performance: 🍁 Hiroshima Kagura "Autumn Leaves Viewing" Taira no Koreshige, on a Kano journey, gets lost and enters Mount Togakushi in Shinshu, where he is lured by the demon women of Mount Togakushi, who are waiting for him for a feast of autumn leaves viewing. When Koremochi becomes drunk at a drinking party and his life is in danger, the Great Bodhisattva Hachiman, to whom he regularly worships, descends and saves him. Having saved his life, Koremochi takes the sacred sword he was given and happily subjugates the demon woman. ■Kagura in Hiroshima Prefecture Kagura is performed in many different ways in various parts of Japan. It is believed that the kagura in Hiroshima developed in the Edo period from Iwami Kagura, which had evolved from Izumo kagura. Izumo kagura is composed of ritual dances, which show the procedures to invite the advent of gods, and Noh dances, which dramatize the admiration of the virtues of gods in order to thank them for having descended from heaven. In the process of evolution, the kagura in this area was also strongly influenced by Yahata kagura and Takachiho kagura in Kyushu and Bitchu kagura in Okayama as well as the old local beliefs of the farmers in the mountainous areas of the Chugoku region. The kagura in Hiroshima is characterized by its dramatization. It has developed into a free and relaxed traditional performing art extremely popular among ordinary people. There are 300 kagura groups in Hiroshima Prefecture. The dancers, who are all amateurs, practice hard to improve their skills. They work or go to school during the daytime, but they play important roles, as volunteers, to preserve kagura. The popularity of kagura has greatly contributed to maintaining people's faith in their shrines and deities and to perpetuating their ancestors' awe and reverence for the threats and blessings of the nature and deities. In the process of dramatization, the kagura in Hiroshima has not lost the archetype of kagura, in which deities and humans come together and enjoy themselves. ■Momijigari (Maple Viewing) 　This story of Kagura was created from a legend about Mount Togakushi in Shinshu Province, where the high ranges of mountains are likened to the roof of Japan, in a beautiful Japanese autumn setting. About one thousand years ago, the demons that lived in Mount Togakushi frequently attacked the nearby villages and looted them. 　The villainy of the demons was reported to the capital, and General Taira no Koremochi, who protected the security of the country, headed from the capital to Mount Togakushi to attack the demons. 　When Koremochi and others went into the mountain, was deeply moved by the beautiful maple trees shining like a crimson sea reflecting the autumn sun and felt as if he had wandered into another world. 　There he saw a beautiful woman, who invited him to a party under the maple trees. The woman was actually a demon in disguise. 　Koremochi and others forgot their role as General and, without knowing that the woman was a demon, they drank sake, which they continued to ply them with until they passed out. 　The demon revealed its true identity and was about to tear Koremochi apart and eat him. Then, a god that Koremochi always worshiped appeared and woke them up.
