A Southern California Backyard Turned Into a Resort-Level Tropical Garden

Today on Jungle Land 805, I spend the day exploring one of the most extraordinary private tropical gardens I’ve ever seen—right here in Camarillo, California. You may know him on TikTok as Opal Man Dan, where Dan Williams has recently gained a following for his mesmerizing hobby of shaping, polishing, and setting opals into custom jewelry. But long before opals, Dan has been quietly terraforming his own backyard paradise for the past 34 years. What he’s created is nothing short of a resort-level tropical oasis: a natural-looking swimming pool with a water slide and waterfalls, a koi pond, massive lava rock fire pit, tiki torches, lush palms, bromeliads, rare tropical plants, and tropical fruit trees—all arranged across a dramatic, multi-level landscape. There’s even a beautifully appointed poolside bungalow that’s available to rent on Airbnb. As we walk the property together, Dan shows me an incredible collection of rare palms and tropical plants—many of which he germinated himself from seeds he collects from all over the world. His ability to sprout rare species is uncanny, and his on-site greenhouse is living proof of years of patience, experimentation, and success. Building this garden took vision, muscle, and commitment: over 100 tons of rock, cranes, heavy equipment, and more than a few people wielding crowbars to maneuver massive boulders into place. The result feels like something you’d expect to find at a luxury resort in Hawaii—not in a Southern California backyard. And while the garden is magical by day, it becomes absolutely breathtaking at night. Once the lava-rock fire pit is lit, tiki torches flicker, and the colorful accent lighting comes on, the entire space transforms into something truly majestic. Nearly everything you see here was crafted by Dan himself, alongside friends and family.
