It's never just the music alone! Of course, it's at the heart of every club night – without it, there's no dancing, no vibe, no reason to even go. But what truly defines a club only emerges from the interplay of these elements: There's the crowd, filling the space with life. There's the sound, the physically palpable sonic landscape. And there's the light. Often underestimated, yet essential! Lighting design can be subtle and pulsating, or brutal and flashing. In some clubs, it's more understated, in others a central component of the staging. But a club night without strobe effects? Hardly conceivable. Light sets accents, guides emotions – it brings the space to life. Julian, aka Light Machinery, is well-versed in precisely these kinds of concepts. He cut his teeth at KitKat and is now a regular at RSO and Sisyphos. What's astonishing, however, is how invisible lighting operators remain in the club scene. Yet they are the ones who truly bring the music and the people to life. Berlin Booth therefore sheds light on precisely this dark spot: the quiet but central role of lighting design in club culture. We spoke with Julian about his experiences, his work, and a question that keeps cropping up in Berlin's nightlife: How much does the scene still thrive on the DIY spirit today?
