On 17 January 1991, coalition forces launched the opening air campaign of the Gulf War, aimed at driving Iraqi troops out of Kuwait following the invasion of the previous year. Britain played a significant role within the multinational coalition, deploying land, sea, and air forces under Operation Granby. As the conflict began, British Army units were stationed near Hafar al-Batin, Saudi Arabia, conducting intensive training and preparations for a ground offensive.
