Having won several spectacular games, Tigran Vartanovich rose to the challenge, taking clear first place with 10 points out of 15. Unlike many other championships, the winner's lead over his pursuers wasn't that large – four players trailed Petrosyan within half a point. Among them was 23-year-old Oleg Romanishin, who at the time didn't hold the grandmaster title – it was Romanishin who inflicted Petrosyan's only defeat.
