It was the first digital optical recording system. It is also known as CD-A. The CD-A format aimed to overcome the limitations of conventional formats, becoming the first sound reproduction system that barely deteriorates with use, since it can be played repeatedly without losing sound quality. The document called the Red Book defines the standard for CD-A. It belongs to a set of standards known as the Rainbow Books, which contains the technical specifications for all formats in the compact disc family. The first edition of the Red Book was published in 1980 by Philips and Sony and was adopted by the Digital Audio Disc Committee and ratified under the IEC 908 standard.
