During the summer, dense fog prevents ships from maintaining visual contact despite 24-hour daylight. In winter, temperatures fall below 50 degrees, the superstructures are thick with ice, and the convoys are enshrouded in permanent darkness. Veterans interviewed tell stories about their ordeal in that season when a thousand eyes stared into the darkness where, at any moment, a submarine or an iceberg could appear. Every sailor in the Arctic convoys knew: if their ships were attacked, death was almost guaranteed.
