On August 12, 2000, the nuclear submarine Kursk sank to the bottom of the Barents Sea. Twenty-three people were in the ninth compartment. Nineteen of them had moved there from the forward compartments. One of these nineteen was Lieutenant Commander Rashid Aryapov, commander of the sixth reactor compartment. Two notes were found in the aft shelter. One, by Lieutenant Commander Dmitry Kolesnikov, was published. The second, presumably by Aryapov, was never published. On November 9, 2000, Vice Admiral Dobroskochenko publicly identified the author. A few days later, the official position changed: authorship was not confirmed. Twenty-five years have passed.
