He had been trapped under the rubble for more than seven days after the earthquakes that struck Venezuela last Wednesday. Following an extraordinary rescue operation, dozens of people formed a corridor outside what was the parking lot of the Galerías Playa Grande shopping center before the tragedy to celebrate Gil's safe extraction. Flags from Costa Rica, Portugal, El Salvador, and Chile were visible at the scene—some of the countries whose rescuers participated in what many considered a miracle amidst the tragedy the country has been experiencing since last week.
