Neue Siemens Mireo-Triebzüge für die S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland – Erster Betrieb im Juni 2026
With the change of timetables in December of 2026 new Siemens Mireo trainsets are to be introduced at S-Bahn-Mitteldeutschland (the suburban rail system of the Leipzig/Halle region in Germany). Currently two of them are already in use on lines S5 and S5X between Halle and Zwickau. The two 3-sectional electric multiple units (EMUs) are operated by the railway company "Die Länderbahn". It belongs to the Italian Netinera group of firms. Die Länderbahn will take over operation of the lines S5, S5X and S3 by the end of 2026. The new vehicles are numbered as class 463. They are longer than the 3-sectional Talent 2 EMUs that have been used so far, and they offer more room for passengers. With respect to the room they can rather be compared with the 4-sectional Talent 2 units that are often running on line S3. The entrance height of the Mireo EMUs for S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland is 610 mm. So from the entrance 3 steps lead to the section with elevated floor while a small ramp leads up to the part of the cars that can be reached without steps. There are large multi-purpose sections. The section for bicycles offers a lot of space. The handles for standing passengers, however, hang rather high. Passengers smaller than 175 cm may have difficulties to get hold there. Seats placed in groups of 4 have tables where mobile devices can be charged by induction. 3-sectional Mireo EMUs are longer than the Talent 2 units. So 2 Mireo units are too long for the platforms at the stations between Halle central station and Halle-Trotha. Currently the 2nd (rear) EMUs is closed for passengers on that part of the line. Siemens Mireo EMUs are are also used on the regional express line RE 10 between Leipzig, Cottbus and Frankfurt (Oder). These units are equipped with luggage racks and they have fewer doors. S-Bahn Rhein-Neckar (the suburban train system of the Mannheim/Ludwigshafen/Heidelberg region) also operates Siemens Mireo EMUs and uses them between Mainz, Mannheim and Karlsruhe and on other lines. Those Mireos have folding seats in the bicycle compartment, no supports for standees like the units of S-Bahn MItteldeutschland. The entrance height of the Rhein-Neckar trainsets is 800 mm.
