The 80th Annual Meeting of the Japan Esophageal Society will be held on June 25-26 at Hotel Hamatsu in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. With the advent of robot-assisted surgery and immune checkpoint inhibitors, esophageal cancer treatment is undergoing a major transformation. The theme chosen by the conference president, Professor Koji Kono (Chair of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Fukushima Medical University), is "Resilience—Flexible Recovery—". We spoke with Professor Emeritus Hideaki Shimada of Toho University, who plans to attend the conference, about his thoughts behind the conference theme and the highlights of the key sessions.
