Theme From "Shoulder To Shoulder" [March Of The Women] * Georgia Brown
Released in 1985 on the Themes From Masterpiece Theatre album. SQN – 5057-1. Music by Dame Ethel Smyth, lyrics by Cicely Hamilton. Sung by Georgia Brown and music arranged by Stanley Myers. Shoulder to Shoulder is a 1974 BBC television serial and book relating the history of the women's suffrage movement, both edited by Midge Mackenzie. The drama series grew out of discussions between Mackenzie and the actress and singer Georgia Brown, who was dissatisfied at the lack of decent roles for women in TV drama. Brown enlisted the producer Verity Lambert in the project she and Mackenzie were devising to dramatise the struggle for women's suffrage, and the three women presented the idea to the BBC, which gave approval for the series. Sadly neglected by most television historians, books and websites, 'Shoulder to Shoulder' was a stirring piece of British televisual drama that portrayed one of the most important movements in the history of civil rights, and is therefore more than deserving of its place in Television Heaven. "The March of the Women" is a song composed by Dame Ethel Smyth in 1910, to words by Cicely Hamilton. It became the official anthem of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) and more widely the anthem of the women's suffrage movement throughout the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Activists sang it not only at rallies but also in prison while they were on hunger strike. Smyth produced a number of different arrangements of the work.
