Description The plant is a tuberous or rhizomatous perennial. Each erect stem bears a foliage of a few lanceolate leaves and ends in an umbel of 3 to 10 flowers. These have 6 petals with contrasting colored markings and patches. The basic chromosome number is x = 8. Taxonomy The genus was described by Carl Linnaeus and published in Planta Alstroemeria 8. 1762.2. The type species is: Alstroemeria pelegrina L. Etymology Alstroemeria: generic name chosen by Carl Linnaeus in honor of his friend, the Swedish botanist Baron Clas Alströmer.
