Amidst the clanging symbols of empire, the African American spirituals have long been sung to ensure “there’s plenty good room” for all of God’s children through its dignity- affirming lyrics. Moaned to re-story lives dehumanized and marginalized. Hummed to re- cast futures restricted by the gentrification of time. Shouted to give rhythm to blues bodies and to organize. Because we cannot wait for America to change its tune. Instead, we must “lift every voice and sing,” “Ain’t Gonna’ Let Nobody Turn Me Roun’!”
