SAPS Youth: Constable Phemula's Role in Crime Prevention

As South Africa observes Youth Month, the South African Police Service (SAPS) continues its national campaign, “SAPS Youth – Leading the Reset Agenda,” highlighting the determination, resilience, and achievements of its young members who are helping to shape the future of policing. In this insert, we highlight one of our hardworking and dedicated members, Constable Dakalo Phemula (35), from the Social Crime Prevention Unit. This unit focuses on addressing the root causes of crime through community involvement and proactive measures. It works by forming partnerships with various stakeholders, including community organisations, NGOs, civil society, and other government departments. The goal is to create safer environments and empower communities to prevent crime effectively. Constable Phemula organises awareness campaigns in schools to educate learners about crime prevention strategies, such as reporting suspicious activities and avoiding risky behaviours. He assists schools in implementing structured crime prevention programmes that address gender-based violence, gangsterism, bullying, drug abuse, and the possession of weapons. He also engages learners through mentorship, skills development, and recreational activities, helping to steer them away from crime and towards positive opportunities.
