🇲🇦 The tram in Morocco's capital connects it with the larger neighbouring city of Salé on its own tracks. The trams are powered by non-genuine Citadis 302 double-unit trams from the French manufacturer Alstom. The cleanliness of the stops and vehicles is striking. There are two lines that overlap in the area of the Bou-Regreg river. The new tramway was opened in May 2011 and will have a total length of 27 kilometres by February 2025. The two lines L1 and L2 serve 43 stops. At the terminuses, the tracks are changed via points; there are no loops. The advantage of the tram is that it connects sights, in particular the Tour Hassan, which is also home to the mausoleum of Kings Mohammed V and Hassan II, as well as the highest tower in Africa (as of mid-2024) Tour Mohammed VI and the Grand Théatre de Rabat designed by Zara Hadid. The tram crosses the Bou-Regreg on the modern bridge named after Hassan II before reaching the neighbouring town of Salé, the Bab el-Mrissa, which dates back to the 13th century. The L1 tram also connects to the railway station and then passes through the city wall to the suburbs. The L2 line turns at the central transfer point Place Al Joulane - where the Saint-Pierre Catholic Cathedral is located - towards the old town, giving easy access to the Great Mosque, the medina and the souk.
