Until June 2006, he served as the director of the Center for Nanotechnology at Ames. He also is a founding member of the Interagency Working Group on Nanotechnology (IWGN) established by the Office of Science and Technology Policy in Washington, D.C. The IWGN is responsible for developing the National Nanotechnology Initiative.
