The trans opera singer who went from soprano to tenor

Holden Madagame thought he would never sing again when he knew he had to take testosterone to be the man he wanted to be. There was seemingly no precedent for professional opera singers to transition gender and retain a high-level performance in their voice. But Holden's journey is different. A few years into a program of testosterone, he is training at the Glyndebourne Academy, which coaches young singers to overcome their barriers and achieve their potential. Raqqa lies in ruins, the last Isis fighters bussed out in an evacuation deal to regroup in the desert. The Independent is taken on a tour around the now-ghost town Raqqa by some of the YPJ women who helped get revenge on ISIS for their brutal occupation and violence.
