Thorns And Roses: What Comes Around Goes Around For 80's Hair Bands

The downfall of 80's "hair-metal" is often blamed on the emergence of "grunge" but maybe there's more to story. Sure, the Seattle sounds Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Nirvana were in stark contrast to the dolled-up, pretty boys of the Sunset Strip who just wanted to get laid. Or, maybe it was time for their audience to grow-up and move on anyways. One other major factor to consider is the "generational shift" that occurs when teenagers or young adults simply grow out of the music trends and habits they once held so closely. As Phil Collins once stated in an early 80's interview when asked why his band Genesis were no longer a straight-up progressive rock outfit, he responded by asking, "Do you wear the same clothes as you used to? Read the same books? Why the hell should I have to make the same music?". Funny how we never want to see our favorite rock stars change yet we do all the time. What's interesting is how this "coming of age" for the 80's "hair metal" scene was actually a blessing in disguise. Sure, even though many of the most successful bands of the time, like Motley Crue and Poison, were largely disregarded in the 90's, time would prove how another generational shift would bring them right back again, arguably bigger than ever before. Two years ago, I made a video on this topic called "Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow" where I shared my thoughts on growing up as a music-loving teenager during this time period in the 80's. To my surprise, lately, the video has been among my Top 10 most viewed videos over the past couple of months. When I see something like this, it indicates there's an "appetite for discussion" on the topic so maybe there's something more to yap on about in a related video.
