The Original Dark Souls 1.0 - Game Design Analysis & Reflection

Rush Hour | An Introspective Dark Souls Commentary It's a long story... My initial concept for this video was a reflection of the Dark Souls newcomer experience 15 years ago. I wanted to share my thoughts on what made that first playthrough so magical, and how that magic faded over the years. Unfortunately, I wasn't happy with the video I made. I recorded about an hour of footage of the Remastered version, and I couldn't relay that newcomer experience very well, so into the trash it went. My new plan involved playing my original PS3 copy, but I couldn't capture footage. My cheap, old capture card was able to capture footage from the console, but it died. I bought an expensive one that's somehow worse: it can't bypass the PS3's HDCP. I didn't want to buy an HDMI splitter to make this silly video, so I put the PS3 back into hibernation. Plan three involved playing through RPCS3. I recorded an hour of footage and made comparisons between the original and Remastered versions (which is why, for the first hour of this video, I show those comparisons). Though it portrayed that newcomer experience a little better, it was an unfinished video. I couldn't just end it at The Depths, and I had zero desire to play through the game twice (both the original and Remastered versions) to have side-by-side comparisons throughout the entire game. The full 10 hours of my SL1 recording from 2024 is lost media, otherwise I would've relied on that. Plan four was to just play through the emulated version all the way through and commentate on the game design. The drawback is that my original idea became lost as a result, so after the one hour mark this becomes more of a critique. There's no consistent subject you can follow from the beginning to the end because the first hour is a lot less analytical. This is a messy, overly-long, disjointed video that I'm not happy with. After spending all this time working on it, I figured I might as well release what I made and hope it functions as a halfway decent sleeping aid. Even if it doesn't, I learned a lot about my analytical shortcomings while making this video, so hopefully I can use this learning experience to make better videos in the future.
