Torah Portion Vayera - Yeshua & Angels Visit Abraham, How to Walk in Hospitality & Intercession

Vayera - “And he appeared..” Genesis 18:1 - 22:24 The name of this week’s Torah portion, Vayera, means “And He Appeared”, which alludes to God’s appearance to Abraham multiple times throughout this portion, often in the form of a human. Abraham pleads with God to spare the wicked city of Sodom for the few righteous people that remain, but there were not enough to save the city, only Lot, his wife and their two unmarried daughters. Judgment is cast upon the evil city, but through His grace and mercy, God provides a way of escape for Lot and his family. Two angels disguised as men arrive at the doomed city to both to lay judgement on its wicked inhabitants and also to save Lot and his family. Through these messengers, God commands Lot to run to the mountains, but he argues and asks to be able to flee to the small town of Tsoar instead. God concedes and agrees to hold back the destruction until Lot and his family are safely within the borders of Tsoar, but after arriving, Lot’s wife turns back in longing for her old life and is turned into a pillar of salt. It is only then, through fear, that Lot runs to the mountains with his two remaining daughters, who take it upon themselves to preserve their father’s bloodline and after getting him drunk, bear a child each to him: Ammon and Moab. The latter part of our Parsha concludes with an event that truly shows the devotion of Abra-ham to his God, willing to sacrifice his firstborn and promised son, as a sign of faith.
