Whirlpool/Kenmore Washer Not Neutral Draining - STEP-BY-STEP How To Fix!
Originally recorded March 23, 2024. Portions recorded sometime in October, 2016 & March 30, 2024. The neutral drain mechanism in a Whirlpool direct drive washer works to prevent the tub from spinning prematurely while the machine is still full of water and trying to pump it out. Over time, what can happen is the mechanism wears out, to which it will then slip into spin as soon as it starts to pump the water out. In doing so, trying to spin a full tub of water AND clothes can cause premature wear on the motor, transmission and spin clutch, leading to weakened spin acceleration OR EVEN WORSE, no spin at all. Replacing the neutral drain kit before much damage is done, is imperative. If your Whirlpool direct drive washer is not neutral draining like it should, here is how to diagnose and replace it. This in-depth step-by-step video will guide you on how to do that. This will also apply to any Whirlpool-built direct drive branded under Kenmore, Roper, Kitchenaid, Estate, Inglis etc. The tools you will need for this job are as follows: -Pair of pliers (regular or channel-locking will work) -Scraper blade (to clean the old transmission gasket residue) -New RTV silicone gasket maker (Permatex or some brand like that) -Pair of snap-ring pliers -3/8" ratchet w/ extension -1/2" socket (for removing the transmission bolts, and also optionally, the motor mounting plate bolts) -7/16" socket (for removing the agitator) -Flathead screwdriver -#2 Phillips screwdriver -4mm allen key -You may also want a stiff scraper of some kind to pry the transmission cover, otherwise if the gasket is too stubborn, a flathead screwdriver will do the trick. It's also recommended that you have some sort of bucket or container, along with two pieces of wood that you can set the transmission level on to catch any oil that spills out--especially if you decide to also replace the oil in your transmission.
