Thank you! 🙏 Suphan Buri in Central Thailand is located around 90km north of Bangkok. Its name means ‘City of Gold’ and it lies on the Tha Chin River that flows south and out into the Gulf of Thailand at Samut Sakhon. Historians believe that the town was founded under the name Suvarnapurī in about 1350, around the time when nearby – and much older – U Thong was plagued by an epidemic. Like everywhere in the flat central plains of Thailand, it became part of the Ayutthaya Kingdom before becoming a frontier town between Siam and the kingdoms that alternated in modern day Burma with several battles between the two being fought here.
