Background: After one of our previous projects helping the government of Sierra Leone use drones to deliver medical supplies to remote communities, we were eager to see how we can improve and optimize our aircraft to perform drone deliveries in a variety of different environments around the world. In this pizza delivery example, our R&D center in Guadalajara, Mexico worked hard to optimize our aircraft for drone delivery in urban environments. As city streets become more crowded, the airspace above has the potential to become a valuable alternative for speedy transport between two points for delivery of small packages. In this study we discovered several limitations, such as the need to swap batteries multiple times between the pizza restaurant and the skyscraper delivery point, and being unable to take a direct routing between the two points due to local drone regulations. With improved battery technology however, and city infrastructure that is more accommodating for drone flights, we believe the future holds a lot of potential for such operations to become more common.
